Winter has definitely settled in on the prairies and with it comes all sorts of marvels.
This week the weather has been strangely foggy, leaving layers of hoar frost on the landscape. I managed to take a moment for a stroll amongst the crystal trees with my camera but it seems as though some of the magic disappears through the lens. I suppose it’s just something you have to experience in person to truly appreciate it – the biting cold, the crunch of footsteps, the soft tinkling of icicles… So much beauty and inspiration!
And of course, with the cold weather comes the need to hunker down with a warm mug of something and some fabric to piece together. To me that’s the best part of winter – “to quilt without the guilt.” Not that I spend a lot of time feeling guilty about quilting any time of the year, but when there is no siren call of the veggie or flower beds to lure me into the garden, one certainly finds it easier to focus on beautiful fabric.
At first I was going to just add this onto the bottom of yesterday’s post but decided it needed a little post of its own. I’m so thrilled with how this little quilt turned out because you just never know with a ‘mystery’ quilt, but I put my faith in Temecula Quilt Co. and I definitely wasn’t disappointed. I managed to piece the top together this week and I’m a little on the fence about borders. If you care to weigh in with your opinion, please leave me a comment.
Until next time, happy stitching!

It’s gorgeous! I love it as is! If you need it to be larger, you could add a border, but it doesn’t need one!
Hi Kathy,
Thank you so much for leaving such a lovely message! And I really value your opinion on the borders. I’m leaning on the side of just leaving it as is, although it turned out smaller than I’d like. I think perhaps a border would overwhelm the effect of all that tiny piecing.
Keep checking back to see the finished project and I’ll keep you posted on what I decide :o) as always, carol
I say no borders too! Looks great “on the fence”! xoxo
Thanks, Tammy! I think I’m leaving it borderless after all. Funny that you caught my “on the fence” pun :o) hugs from your bubby
I thought about putting borders on mine, but decided it looked a little more vintage without them. Loving all the versions of Secret Santa–such fun! The frosted trees are gorgeous!
Thanks so much for commenting on my Secret Santa quilt, Karen. I totalling agree about the quilt looking more authentically antique without the borders. I used mostly Civil War reproduction scraps for my piecing and I think I’m going for a vintage look, too. This was one of the best Temecula Quilt-Alongs I’ve done – and I’ve done a few over the years. This one seemed to go quickly though and I hope to get it finished before Christmas :o)
I did add borders to mine, but your version looks lovely as-is. Your wintery pictures are wonderful!
Thanks Jeanne, wasn’t that a wonderful quilt-along! I’ll have to check out your borders before I make a final decision. I sure appreciate you having a look at my blog though. Happy holiday season.
Carol you made a wonderful version. Your fabrics give it a lot of interest and movement. I don’t think you need borders unless you want to grow it. Ha
Thank you for checking out my blog, Nancy! I really appreciate you weighing in on the border question. To b(order) or not to b(order) that is the question… and after much deliberation I choose not.
